Imperial Sugar Received $345 Million From Insurers for Refinery Explosion

Despite not having paid one dime to any refinery explosion victim injured in the Imperial Sugar explosion, the Imperial Sugar Company has announced that it has received $345 Million from its own insurers to cover the cost of rebuilding the Port Wentworth refinery and business interruption caused by the February 7, 2008 explosion.

According to the Chemical Safety Board, the Imperial explosion was entirely preventable and caused by the dangerous accumulation of combustible sugar dust at the Port Wentworth facility. Litigation against certain Imperial entities on behalf of the workers who suffered burn injuries and Georgia work injury in the explosion continues. Construction Accident Causes Work Injury and Death

scaffold collapse.jpgFive construction workers repairing balconies at a residential highrise were hurt at work, and subsequently died, after scaffolding the men were working on collapsed. The men plunged thirteen stories. Four men died, with one living but in critical condition.

Retired Worker Dies of Mesothelioma

John McTaggart worked as a plumber and engineer, and was exposed to asbestos early in his working life. One of his last acts before death was to case a vote in a municipal election he was running in. OSHA Fine Against Disney For Work Injury

OSHA has fined the Disney company Disney $44,000 after a July accident on the Walt Disney World train caused a worker death. According to reports, one of the trains was driving in reverse during a track switch, backing into another train, killing the driver.

This type of accident, whether it's a Georgia work injury, requires an Atlanta workers comp lawyer or a product liability case, is entirely preventable with adequate worker training and communication. Here, a worker in a maintenance bay apparently mistakenly radioed that it was clear for the train to begin backing up, even though the track had not been realigned.
